"Hang the N-----!” These are the words shouted as the young, blonde television reporter announces that the jury has reached a guilty verdict for Maurice Lagrone, Jr. It is a night like most at Snappers Bar and Grill in Clinton, IL., beer drinking buddies, farmers and laborers watching the 5:00 pm news. Not an African American in the joint. If you were to ask, you would be told that most can't remember or don't know if an African American has ever been in Snappers. And when those words ring in the air, no one bats an eye. No one stands up or jumps onto the bar to renounce the appalling words. They all agree. The n----- should hang. He deserves to die.
As for the pretty, blonde reporter, many central Illinois reporters are just that. Smart, attractive young women hoping to break out of the smaller market into a bigger one. Hoping that this case might be the one to get them the attention they need to move up and out of central Illinois. The "Rogers" in this case pay close attention to these reporters. Special Prosecutor Roger Simpson and Dewitt County sheriff Roger Massey wink at some of them openly in court and smile with their aging, cocky grins. With these grins come leaks of information through secret phone calls, telling the preferred reporters “nothing is going to happen in court today, so don’t waste your time driving over.” In Clinton, this is nothing new. Neither is the tragedy of the three children who drowned in Clinton Lake in September of 2003. This incident, like everything else in the small town, has become old news.
No one can ever know what happened that night besides Amanda and Maurice. I suspect that, as time has passed, they have forgotten the truth; they have buried it in the recesses of their minds. Their perceptions have shifted, their stories have changed, certain lives have been lost. This is what happens in tragedies. After three years of studying this case, I still don’t know what happened. The prosecutors, the defense, the detectives, the jury… None of them can lend a hand in helping us to KNOW what really occurred. I can certainly tell you what I believe, but that is all any of us have. Our beliefs in a world where the truth is often relative.
This case is not about guilt or innocence in the simplest form. The accused are guilty of something. Three small children don't just perish in the presence of two able-bodied adults. But the question is guilty of what? Pre-meditated, intentional homicide, or negligence and unintentional homicide? Should our system punish them by putting them to death when we can never KNOW what took place? Should someone be prosecuted and potentially executed because a small county cannot afford the cost of a trial? This case was paid for by the State of Illinois Special Litigation Fund because the county couldn't afford a "life in prison" trial. So they decided to gamble with another life. Yet, isn't that exactly what Maurice and Amanda are accused of?

Great Job - that town....
My guess is Amanda will get off with time served on February 1st. That fool (not to be confused with the Clinton mayor) Maurice confessed to the actual deed and belongs right where he is.
The truth of the matter is that this has become a case of racism. Amanda was there mother and if she wasnt in on it she would have saved her kids. They both should have got the same punishment!
I had no idea this "Relative Truth" existed until today. As a person from Clinton, I would like to say that this is very interesting and a job well done. This short story, if you will, actually made you think differently about the whole situation. No one will ever know, and that is something that can never change. All we have, is what WE believe and what WE think. Thank you for an interesting story.
Amanda's lawyer said during the trial that everyone says they would be the "hero" in her situation but nobody really knows what they would do..I find that to be farthest from the truth...it's not being a "hero"...it's being a PARENT!! The only reason that she was not in the water doing everything in her power to save her kids was because she was in on it and knew exactly what was going on...it's a total injustice what happened in Amanda's case...I hope that Amanda is haunted every night but her childern's face knowing that she stood on the shoreline as her three kids drowned in a couple feet of water! While she may have got off in this lifetime she will be judged one day
The short story you have presented seems to be an indictment of the City of Clinton. The environmental factors of a small town do not lead one to murder their children as you seem to believe. Seems to me that you are using this tragedy to express your negative feelings about the town. the fact is neither Maurice nor Amanda tried to save the kids. It is sad that she will soon be free to have another child.
Who is the young blonde reporter?
This is an interesting documentary despite your bias against the city of Clinton. Perhaps you would better serve the young man and woman involved in this tragedy by creating a documentary that is less negative and more neutral. Truthfully, even after the curtains close on these trials and the actors go home, we will never know what went on that evening. Guilt or innocense, in these little life plays, is only declared to appease the general public. The truth is only secondary to this.
The "author" of this "short story" would have more facts and insight than the general public. I know myself that the town of Clinton has different ways of handling different cases to suit themselves based on who or what you are. Unless you know Amanda and Maurice and know all of the facts, everyone should keep their opinions to themselves. This was a tragic accident that maybe could have had a different outcome but these two people have to live with this the rest of their lives. If you live in Clinton, chances are you are a racist and you also don't beleive anything is wrong with what happens in that town. You have blinders on until something like this happens. Has anyone talked to Amanda since she has been in jail? She may not remember all that happened that night and maybe never will, however we all need to hear what happened that night from Amanda and not just from the newscasts bfore we can convict her to life in prison. Are all of you sure that they did nothing to try to get the kids out? Ask her or her mother or her grandparents to find out more of the truth. These two are guilty of something but until you talk to Amanda don't call her a murderer. I'm sure she is haunted by the little faces of her children and like I said she will have to live with it no matter what happens.
I am a teen from clinton and I happen to know Amanda Hamm and have had a few incounters with Maurice Lagrone myself. Do I think the case was set up because of the parents of Amanda? Possibly. IN this documentary the older members of clinton make clinton seem racist and unwelcoming towards blacks but in all reality it isnt. Noone critisized Amanda for dating somone of the opposite race noone even acknowledged it untill the deaths of the three innocent children. So No I dont think it has anything to do with racism...I believe it has to do with the status or possily the employment of the accused mother!! How can someone be said not guilty if the mother is in the documentary admitting to the faults of her daughter?
In review of this tragedy it is very heart wrenching to hear of the deaths of three innocent children. When the story was broadcasted nationwide it was presented as a mother and boyfriend had murdered the children. That was the story I received on the east coast. Hearing something of such nature brings up anger and hatred for the accused in such a crime. After speaking to one of the youth's in the documentary I was informed of a more potential accidental incident versus what the media had presented. I began to wonder did I alow myself to convict these people I do know based on the media who was not present at the time of the incident? I am ashamed to say Yes! It is amazing how news media has to sell a story without presenting all of the facts just present the sensationalism of shock that is all they want to do. Yet the documentary also shows much else about the small town of Clinton. I would never move there with my family. Why is the local youth just hanging out in the streets looking for a thrill. Parents can you instill any sense of values in your children and get them of the streets. And you prejiduce parenst you make me sick not prejiduce in the sense of racsim but in the sense of MOney! You could care less about the truth as long as it doesn't cost money. Get those children off the streets and give them incentive to work and better your community then you wount have to worry about money people may want to actually live there if the residents were not whiners about whoah is me because it may cost 2million dollars. How can you put any price on anybodies life. You guys make me as sick as when I first heard the news of the deaths. No wonder your town is so messed up!
I think it is so funny that the author of the article thinks that Maurice was found guilty because he is black and that Clinton is a town full of racist idiots. Did it ever accure to him that he was convicted be cause he is a cold, heartless, murdering bastard that deserves to die? Same goes for the worthless pathetic excuse for a mother of those poor children. May they rest in peace and as for the two murding slime-balls, may the good LORD show them no mercy on there judgement day!!!!
Clinton, Illinois, September, 1858:
Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debated at the northwest corner of the square in 1848. It was here that Lincoln said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all of the time"
I mention this because I have yet to hear anyone from Clinton or elsewhere mention the significance of Clinton Illinois and Lincoln. I mean he didn't just have the debate with Douglas but didn't he have a law office there in Clinton for almost 19 years?
Being from that town it IS hard to not be biased and negative. Most people in Clinton are not openly racist. At heart I don't believe very many people there are. I do believe that most people in Clinton shelter themselves from the outside world, anyone who reads the Journal would probably agree with me on that. When a Tragedy and a loss of this magnitude happens and all of a sudden CNN are in town and the Sheriff is mentioning Susan Smith and "the Incident" in the same breath the Community doesn't know how to react. If CNN is there then she must be guilty! I was sickened to see how not only the Media reacted but how the Sheriff conducted himself. It was shameful to see the powers that be in Clinton use the Tragedy to their advantage. To me, the most shameful was the delayed Press Conferences from Massey and then little to no factual information. It felt these were set up to voice anger and opinion.
I too wish Amanda would have gotten up on the stand and told what happened that awful night but I am not so sure she actually remembers, especially after so many people telling you what happened (The St. Mary's Statement). Maybe eventually some of the transcripts will get released and we can finally come to our own conclusions based off fact.
I am sorry for the book but this has been on my mind now since the day we all lost the children. I know that the family are some of the most beautiful people you could ever meet and for something as horrible as this to happen to them is beyond comprehension.
I am not sure if you have or not but maybe incorporate a little of Lincoln and Clinton's past. From what I hear Clinton used to be a really booming place with not only Lincoln's history there but also the Railroad. This case would have been worthy of Lincoln.
nigga guilty,f*ck him...
What a shame that Amanda is not going to pay for what she did to her children...
Unless you count the dreams those kids will visit upon her night after night.
Shame on the jury, shame on the judge.
Maybe the kids are better off since they had a pig for a mother.
So many things to say yet not enough space. As a grandmother of 1 I cannot imagine losing 3 grandchildren. I don't believe I could stand behind my child if they were part of something so terribly horrific. Maybe if Amanda's mom would have kept herself out of the Eagles, Snappers and wherever else she drank and stayed home to be a grandmother she would have seen some signs of abuse and the children being afraid of LaGrone. And could have taken the children and had them put in foster care or God forbid let their fathers have them. But hey public aide checks are good money for those who care not to work and just breed and live off of the system. When Amanda walks into prison no matter where I am sure those women will be waiting for her. Prisoners take care of those who abuse and neglect children. These three babies are never going to be able to rest in peace because even in death their mother didn't have the guts to stand up and take part of the blame for their deaths.
this is about a white woman being with a black guy thats what it amounts to and if amanda was a good mom where all these people that are quite to judge them that say she was so trible to the kids especilly you ann powers and all these daddys they had if she was that bad why didnt you do something to help her rather condemd her and her friend the old saying what comes around go around so clinton people dont be so quick to throw stones it could happen to you
I am married to a black man and he is a great guy. We have a little girl and i am glad we do not live in clinton. the elderly that says he deserve to die and hang him was raised like that. THANK YOU MOM FOR NOT RAISING ME LIKE THAT.We live in a small white town and everyone seems to have no problem with us or my daughter going to the school. Yes, it was a racist thing i believe it was and always will.
WHITE OR BLACK GOD CREATED US EQUAL. I AM WHITE MARRIED TO A BLACK MAN HE IS GREAT, WORKS AS HARD AS A WHITE PERSON WILL. I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT THE COMMENT THAT WAS SAID HANG HIM. WHATEVER HAPPEN TO RACISM NOT IN OUR TOWN WELL IT IS SURE IN CLINTON.
